Something About Us - Daft Punk

Thursday Jan 27, 2011

Thursday Jan 27, 2011

I think Daft Punk is pretty okay. I can only take so much before it gets kinda old to me. But I don't really fault them for that. I just don't care too much for the genre.
I like this song, though. It's one of their "slow jams," if you will.
Tron: Legacy was good enough. Not great, but certainly entertaining. The best way I can describe it is to say that it was fun.
These guys did the music to that movie, for those that didn't already know. It didn't sound much like this song, though.

One - Aimee Mann

Thursday Dec 30, 2010

Thursday Dec 30, 2010

Wait, let me explain.
Aimee Mann is okay. She's one of those artists I can kind of take or leave. But every once in awhile she pops up in a soundtrack, and it seems to work pretty well. This song, for instance, comes from the soundtrack to the 1999 film Magnolia which stars about a billion people.
I've been watching some weirder movies recently, like Magnolia (Good, but with a running time of 188 mins.), Synechdoce, NY (Good, felt like 188 mins. but was only 124 mins.), and Black Swan (Not what I hoped for, felt like 1440 mins.).
Two of those have Philip Seymour Hoffman in them, who I enjoy. And for whatever reason, when I think of Philip Seymour Hoffman, I think of Paul Giamatti. Not sure why.
I digress.
Magnolia was good, and this song fit in quite well towards the beginning of the film. Originally done by Harry Nilsson, this song is okay. This version is a little better, in my opinion, but that might only be because I have the association of the film to tack it on to. Hmm.
Regardless, here's Aimee Man with her version of the song One featured in the soundtrack to the film Magnolia.

Pardon me, while I rant.
I pretty much despise contemporary Christmas music. With the exception of maybe Otis Redding's Merry Christmas Baby, and RUN DMC's Christmas in Hollis, I don't like non-traditional Christmas songs. And for the most part, even when artists I like release covers of Christmas songs that I like, more often than not, I don't care for them.
But, working in retail, I don't have a choice as to what kind of Christmas music I hear. And whomever is in charge of picking what music I hear at work seems to have awful taste, especially when it comes to Christmas music. I very rarely hear any classic Christmas songs, and when I do, they are usually remixed or ruined by a pop singer "singing" over it. It's kinda miserable.
They started playing Christmas music at work about a week after Halloween, and I wasn't pleased.
But, one day when I was folding shirts to soon be unfolded and ruined by cranky housewives, I heard this song. In comparison to what is usually heard at my workplace, this was slow and soft. It was enough of a change to immediately catch me attention.
When I got a chance, I looked up who it was, and lo and behold, it was none other than My Morning Jacket; a band that I actually like.
Now, I know that there are people out there that are absolute Christmas purists, and they won't care for this song one bit, mostly because it isn't sung by Bing Crosby. But, I happen to like it, so I thought I'd share.
Since it's finally December 1st, I thought now would be a somewhat appropriate time to bust out some Christmas tunes. Anytime before this would have been too soon.
I hope you enjoy Xmas Time is Here Again by My Morning Jacket.
Merry Christmas and all that.

Busy, busy, busy. School, work, school, work, school, work. And now I have a pretty lady that I call my girlfriend.
So, here's a new post, a full month after my last post. But, this one is just in time for my favorite holiday. I just wish I wasn't so busy this year, because it's looking like I won't be doing much this Halloween. We'll see if my work schedule permits.
But today's post on WHO IS DRIVING CAR?!? involves some of my favorite things. The song itself comes from Disney's Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and the original was performed by Mr. Bing Crosby. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad has been a favorite or mine for awhile, but I have to admit that I usually pass on the Mr. Toad half of the movie. The ride at Disneyland is awesome, though.
The second half of why this song is great is that it's performed in this version by the late Thurl Ravenscroft. If you start listening to the track, you might instantly recognize his voice, and if you check out his resume you'll know why. Some of Thurl Ravenscroft's works include voice work in Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Glen Miller Story, South Pacific, Sleeping Beauty, The Sword in The Stone, Marry Poppins, The Aristocats, The Cat in The Hat, The Lorax, The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh, and The Brave Little Toaster.
If nothing from that list rings a bell, then you'll surely know his as the singing voice from You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch, and as the voice of Tony The Tiger.
And with a name like Thurl Ravenscroft, how can you not be a cool guy?
So, here's Headless Horseman by Thurl Ravenscroft.

One Step Beyond - Madness

Sunday Sep 26, 2010

Sunday Sep 26, 2010

I started work today. Technically, I started last week, but since all I did last week was watch a bad orientation DVD, I'll say that I started today. I heard this at work and I hadn't heard it in a long time. I have to say that, while it's not always good all the time, the music at Old Navy usually isn't bad. I found it easy to tune out the bad music today.
While I was there though, in the middle of folding "Graphic Tees," I found a shirt that I really wanted to buy. It was a Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest shirt that said Coney Island on it and everything. I'm a casual fan of professional gurgitators, so I really wanted the shirt. But as luck would have it, we only had one in the entire store. And it was in a size small. Ironic.
So, as of one day in, I can say that work is going well. Let's hope it stays that way.
Here's One Step Beyond by Madness.

P.S. I couldn't find a picture of the shirt I wanted online, so instead, here's a different shirt that's on sale now at Old Navy.
P.P.S. We have sweaters now, so come buy one or whatever.

I found this song on a website called Versions Galore that features a massive amount of cover songs. It's a really well done site, and the webmaster is a cool person, too.
This is a cover of a Vampire Weekend song from their first, self-titled album. I thought it was a pretty interesting take on an otherwise relatively fast song.
This song does contain a cuss, so don't say I didn't warn you.
Aaaanyway, my radio show starts next week on Tuesday, the 14th of September. So be sure to tune it at 6pm EST to SCADRADIO.org to hear me play music.
Here's Coconut and The Duke with their version of Walcott.

Easy Like Heaven - BRAT

Tuesday Aug 31, 2010

If you don't have the STUMBLE UPON toolbar on your web-browser, you're missing out. You should get it, seriously.
That's how I found this really well done mash up of The Commodores and The Cure.
Also, just as a quick reminder, in a couple of weeks I'll be back on SCAD Radio hosting the soundtracks and scores show called John Cusack's Power Hour. See you then.

Thank goodness for music. And friends. And family.
I probably won't say too much about the music, but through the power of GOOGLE I'm sure you can find out all there is to know about The Phenomenal Handclap Band. Heard them on the satellite radio.
Here they are with their song 15 to 20 from their self-titled album.

Drunk Girls - LCD Soundsystem

Tuesday Jul 20, 2010

Tuesday Jul 20, 2010

My, my, my. It has been quite some time. With all my free time this summer, you'd think that I would have been updating this blog thing left and right. But alas, I have not. I've been lazy and preoccupied with wasting my time with other things.
Not to mention, I'm sharing a song that has been out for awhile, and most of you have already heard. But, I like it, so I thought I'd share.
If you haven't had a chance to pick it up, I would highly suggest getting LCD Soundsystem's latest album This Is Happening. It's fun, it's catchy, and a good bit of it sounds like David Bowie. But not in a ripped off kind of way. In a good way. They do a great job with this album. It's one of my favorites this year, thus far.
So, here's Drunk Girls by LCD Soundsystem.
